Professor Gafanhoto
Angelo Ribeiro was born in Salvador Bahia, Brazil where he began training capoeira at eleven years of age with Mestre Jelon Vieira, the world-renowned master of capoeira, choreographer, and pioneer in bringing the Afro-Brazilian martial art to the United States.Gafanhoto went on to perform for years with the critically acclaimed dance company founded by Mestre Jelon Viera, DanceBrazil. Gafanhoto began teaching capoeira 10 years ago in Bradenton, Florida where he has an established group of students led now by his higher cords. He recently moved to Brooklyn, NY where he has been busy teaching capoeira to children and through NYC public school outreach programs such as Global Arts and Symphony Space, showcasing capoeira performances at locations all over the NY area, and building up his group students here in Brooklyn, New York. Gafanhoto is currently teaching in the In-House Drama Studios at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
